Very few evenings, very carefully chosen. That is the entire business model and I have never wanted a bigger one.

What I sell is closeness that behaves like the real thing for as long as it lasts. Dinner where I ask questions and remember the answers, an argument about a film, my hand finding yours on the table without either of us drawing attention to it. Then a night that never once feels transactional, because if it did I would have failed at the only thing I am actually good at.

I am formal in public and startlingly direct in private, and I have never seen any reason to reconcile the two. You will find me polite at the restaurant and considerably less so afterwards. Sha Tin, nights, and I keep the following morning free rather than rushing off anywhere.

I answer properly or not at all. Write two words and I will assume you wanted somebody else, and I won't be offended when it turns out I was right.

And no, I don't do shorter bookings to see whether we get along. Either the whole evening is worth planning or it isn't, and that decision is made before either of us has spent anything.
